Bullies Called Her A “Loser.” Now This 12-Year Old Lifts Kids Up Around The World.
“Loser” is just about the last thing anybody wants to be called. But Olivia Van Ledtje — better known as Liv — was continuously finding herself on the receiving end of her classmates’ name-calling.
This bullying took a swing at Liv’s confidence, but after a while, she reached out to adults in her life for help. During that time, she turned to books and, in an effort to find her voice, began filming “LivBits,” short videos where she talks about some of her favorite stories.
Liv was surprised when one of her first videos took off — receiving over 500,000 views. In the video, she discusses stereotypes and the importance of loving each other. But she didn’t stop there.
Excited by her newfound confidence, Liv began making videos about everything on her mind. She talked about her favorite books, her favorite animal (which are sharks, FYI), and how to spread love and be an activist at a young age. She even hosted a podcast with some of her favorite authors.
In 2017, I had the opportunity to join Liv in filming a LivBit, and I found myself instantly inspired by her passion and courage.
Today, Liv has traveled around the world to share her message with other children and teachers. She’s even continued her work during the COVID-19 pandemic, channeling her energy into posting more LivBits, visiting classrooms virtually, and participating in educational keynotes.
This Durham native’s passion project has inspired children around the globe and truly represents the best of our state. Through her LivBits, Liv has taught countless children — and adults — about the importance of literacy and being active in our communities. I look forward to seeing what she accomplishes next, and I’m proud to recognize her as March’s Granite Stater of the Month.
