Despite being only five years old, the importance of keeping a neighborhood clean isn’t lost on Manchester’s Carter Manson.

Carter Manson and his mother, Kelly Pascoal.

Since the age of three, Carter has wanted to be a trash collector. For Halloween last year, he even dressed up as one in honor of the men and women he considers his heroes. However, Carter’s dedication to trash collecting has recently gone beyond just looking the part.

Shortly after the stay-at-home order for New Hampshire went into effect, Carter asked his mom, Kelly, if he could go outside to pick up trash. Kelly agreed and took her son to clean up around their neighborhood.

As Carter was hard at work, Kelly took a few photos of her son in action and decided to post them on Facebook. Much to her surprise, the posts received a lot of attention. This inspired Kelly and Carter to launch Carter’s Clean Up Crew, a Facebook group aimed at inspiring others to clean up their communities.

Since then, the Crew has grown to nearly 800 members stretching from New Hampshire to California — and even to Canada. Carter’s group has also received support from 22 businesses, and they’ve raised $1,400 to supply members with what they need to start their own trash pickups.

The Crew is planning their first big cleanup day at the end of August. Carter and Kelly can still be found at least once a week filling a five-gallon bucket with litter all on their own.

Carter’s passion for cleaning up his environment and encouraging others to do the same represents the best of our state and our all-hands-on-deck-spirit. I congratulate Carter on his initiative, and I am honored to recognize him as July’s Granite Stater of the Month.

Do you know a Granite Stater who should be next month’s Granite Stater of the month? Nominate them here.
