This Chester Woman Is Amplifying AAPI Voices Across New Hampshire
At just five months old, Emily Kim Ae Sun Hunter’s entire world changed. Emily and her twin sister moved across the globe from their birthplace of Seoul, South Korea to the Granite State after being adopted.
However, growing up in a predominately white community came with its challenges. The sisters quickly learned what it was like to be the only people of color in a room and were also the target of hate.
Fueled by her past experiences, Emily decided she wanted to make a change in her community. Emily began mentoring Asian American women at her workplace and has emerged as a strong voice in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
When Emily learned about the horrifying mass shooting in Atlanta, Georgia that left eight people dead, including six women of Asian descent, she began organizing a peaceful gathering in Portsmouth that will be held on May 23rd. The event will show support for the AAPI community and distribute resources to help combat discrimination.
Emily has also raised more than $6,500 for AAPI organizations across the country through social media platforms.
Emily’s commitment to uplifting the voices of the AAPI community in New Hampshire — and encouraging others to do the same — truly represents the best of the Granite State. Through spreading her message of inclusivity and acceptance as well as educating the community, Emily has emerged as a strong leader for the AAPI community during a difficult time.
I’m proud to recognize her as April’s Granite Stater of the month as we join together to stand with the AAPI community and condemn the un-American attacks we’ve seen against them.
